Testing Strategies in Clean Architecture

Building a reliable testing pyramid: isolating domains with mock frameworks, database integrations, and automated E2E tests.

Testing is the cornerstone of sustainable software development. Without automated test suites, making changes in a large codebase becomes a lottery. Clean Architecture simplifies testing by splitting code into isolated layers with clear boundaries.

The testing pyramid in Clean Architecture is divided into three core levels: Unit tests, Integration tests, and End-to-End (E2E) tests. Each type serves a specific purpose at its respective abstraction layer.

Unit tests verify domain entities and business use cases. Since the domain layer contains no external framework dependencies (databases, networks), these tests execute in milliseconds. We replace infrastructure layers with Mock or Fake implementations. Example PHPUnit test for an action:

namespace Tests\Unit\Domain\Orders\Actions;

use Tests\TestCase;
use App\Domain\Orders\Actions\CreateOrderAction;
use App\Domain\Orders\Contracts\OrderRepositoryInterface;
use App\Domain\Orders\Models\Order;
use Mockery;

class CreateOrderActionTest extends TestCase
{
public function test_it_creates_order_successfully()
{
$repository = Mockery::mock(OrderRepositoryInterface::class);
$repository->shouldReceive("save")->once()->andReturn(new Order());

$action = new CreateOrderAction($repository);
$result = $action->execute(["item" => "Book"]);

$this->assertInstanceOf(Order::class, $result);
}
}

Integration tests verify that classes communicate correctly with physical infrastructure like databases, Redis, or RabbitMQ. They execute slower than unit tests, but confirm that database schemas, SQL queries, and service drivers are properly configured. The test database is typically rolled back using transactions after each test run.

End-to-End (E2E) tests validate the system as a whole from the perspective of an end-user. They launch a browser, click buttons on the Nuxt 4 frontend, and assert data state updates in the Laravel backend. These are automated using Playwright.

Example Playwright E2E script:

import { test, expect } from "@playwright/test";

test("User can checkout an order", async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto("http://localhost:3000/catalog");
await page.click("text=Add to Cart");
await page.goto("http://localhost:3000/cart");
await page.click("text=Checkout");
await expect(page.locator("text=Order completed successfully")).toBeVisible();
});

Investing in a testing pyramid minimizes production regressions. Clean Architecture enables verifying core business rules isolated from external delivery channels, ensuring test stability and rapid CI/CD cycles even as development teams scale.
